Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
